Krystowski did not defend his title in the discus, but he finished third with a throw of 165-6. It was his third trip to state. He won the discus title two years ago and took seventh last year.
Since 1996, Krystowski has been going to the state track meets to watch his two older brothers compete. His brother Ryan, a 1999 Avon graduate, was a two-time All-Ohioan.
His brother Matt, a 2001 Avon graduate, also earned two-time All-Ohio honors. The tradition was started by Avon graduate Ron Krystowski, the father of the three boys, who was a two-time All-Ohioan.
Bellevue senior Kelly Beamer was simply beaming after her state championship victory in the pole vault. She cleared 11-9, which is a new state record. She broke her own state record of 11-7, which she set earlier this season.
She is coached by her father, Shawn, who has a vaulting club. Her brother Chad won a state pole vault championship in 2001-02 and her grandfather was also a vaulter.
Bellevue junior Will Sumser also trains at Shawn Beamer's vaulting club and the practice paid off. He placed fifth in his first trip to state with a jump of 14-0. His PR this season is 15-0.
He started competing in the pole vault on Friday and cleared 12-6 in the rain. Because of the windy and rainy conditions, the event was delayed until yesterday morning at 7:30.
Sumser was without his teammate, junior Lee Miller. A year ago, Miller took sixth at state. Despite injuring his hip, he advanced to regionals, but did not qualify for state.
Also in the pole vault, Johnny Copley of Keystone placed sixth. He missed two attempts on Friday and took a third jump yesterday. A year ago, he placed 12th in the state.
Perkins junior Jenna Baker pulled a distance double by competing in the 1600 and 3200. She finished seventh in the 1600 (5:09.73) and sixth in the 3200 (1:33.19). She considered not running both races, but chose to challenge herself. She advanced to state last year in the 1600, but did not make it to the podium and finished 10th.
Franek and Schenck also finished first and second in the 3200, while Edison senior Sarah Foster took third. Franek set a new state and meet record.
A year ago, Foster won the 3200. She plans to continue her track career at Ohio State and will once again be competing against Franek, who is going to Penn State.
