Elizabethtown (Pa.) College senior an Ursuline Academy graduate, has been chosen Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Corporation Scholar Athlete in women's outdoor track for the 2005-06 academic year.

Whalen, a middle distance runner, has been a captain for the women's track and field team the past two years. She ran cross country for four years. She helped lead Elizabethtown to its first Middle Atlantic Conference indoor title. Whalen was part of the Blue Jays' record-setting outdoor 4x800 relay (9:58.54) and the indoor 4x800 (10.04.7).

The MASCAC consists of 16 colleges and universities that are members of the MAC, the Commonwealth Conference or the Freedom Conference. A student-athlete must be a senior with a minimum grade-point average of 3.2 to be considered for the scholar-athlete award. A winner is selected for each sport each year based on academic and athletic achievement.

The Brandywine Volleyball Club had great success in recent regional tournament competition and will send two age-group girls teams to the nationals this month.

The Brandywine Bam won their age bracket in the Chesapeake Regional qualifier April 8 in Boyds, Md., while the Bombers finished second in their regional age group March 26.

Asbell replaces who retired after guiding the Lightning to the NCAA Division II Northeast Regional title and a 20th-place finish in the Division II nationals this spring.
