"I wanted to challenge myself and I did. I think I am really good and I could hang with some 14s, and hopefully, I will be better than Serena and Venus [Williams] someday," Pierce said.
Mikaela, who is home-schooled, said she wanted to get some competition and see where she is in her game. She practices daily with Murray from 8:30-11:30 a.m. during the summer and 4:30-8 p.m. when she has school.
"I think my backhand could be a little bit stronger and my serve could go a whole lot faster," Mikaela said. "I think I am good on both sides. I could be a whole lot better because I am not a pro yet. I would like to play in the French Open in 2011 when I turn 16, maybe before then."
"I play the locals in the 12," said Remi, who has been playing tennis for three years. "I like playing in the tournaments and I just like hitting. I don't care about the scores. I just want to get better, and it is good practice. I think I have to move side to side more and hit with more spin. I want to be a tennis player."
"It's getting close," Remi said. "I think I will beat her in the next couple of months. We are both getting older. She is not getting any younger."
American Legion Baseball returned to Margate on May 30 when the city's American Legion Post 157 defeated Pompano Beach AL Post 142 5-4 at the Margate Sports Complex on Banks Road.
In 2005, District Commissioner Paul Renneisen of AL Post 142 worked to rekindle legion ball in Broward by forming the 9 Inning Wood Bat Baseball League. Conforming to American Legion rules, the 2006 season has nine teams registered in the league throughout Broward County.
By allowing players 19 and under to participate, legion baseball provides a high caliber of competition among teams made up of college and high school players. Legion games are nine innings and conform to Major League rules.
"Nine-inning baseball offers so much more than the seven-inning games played during high school and most travel leagues," said American Legion Post 157 manager Doc Holliday. "Our last three games have all been one-run games, with the deciding run being scored in either the eighth or the ninth inning. The combination of wood bats and nine-inning games brings true baseball to Broward."
Playing its first home game in more than two decades, Margate Post 157 jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth on a double by Buddy Fisher (Pompano Beach) followed by Greg Conver's (Margate) home run.
