The three founder members of the Beach Boys have appeared in public for the first time in over 10 years. Brian Wilson, Mike Love and Al Jardine met in Hollywood accepted a prize counting for two million sales of their album Sounds of Summer, a 30-track set featuring hits such as California Girls, I Get Around and Surfin' USA.
.Also present was David Marks, who temporarily took Jardine's place in the 1960s. The other founding member Dennis Wilson drowned in 1983 and Carl Wilson, died of cancer in 1998.
"It's always good to do this while we're living," Jardine retorted before the event, in which band members were presented with framed plaques each containing two platinum vinyl records.
Sounds of Summer was released in 12 nations and spent two years on the Billboard Top 200 counting for the top 10 biggest-selling catalogue albums of all time.
Bruce Johnston, who joined the touring lineup in 1965 thanked the Beach Boys themselves for being great, great artists to produce. "I'd rather produce those guys over any other artists in the whole world. I also wish Dennis Wilson and Carl Wilson could be here with us," Johnston said, to which Love added, pointing up at the sky: "They probably are, because this is pretty close."
