REDLANDS - Two kinds of loud noise heralded Redlands East Valley High School seniors at their graduation Thursday: a bagpipe serenade, which was planned, and a helicopter flyover, which seemed more of a surprise.
This year was the first that a Redlands East Valley football team went undefeated. Students and administrators alike celebrated that and the winning of the citrus smudge pot that goes to the winner of the annual football game with rival Redlands High.
"Our school has so much school spirit -- the hype they made about '06 is so phenomenal," senior Sarah Varela said, waiting with her red- and white-clad classmates to march.
Principal John Maloney praised the class for academic, athletic and extracurricular accomplishments -- including what he said was a near-perfect pass rate of the California High School Exit Exam.
The other senior speaker, Jacob Servin, reminded seniors of the rituals of their free time as Redlands teens -- nights spent in line at the Krikorian theater, haunting coffee shop parking lots, "and having a bet on who could chug the most ketchup."
