After Lee won the points championship two straight years, Midland High claimed the Reporter-Telegram's points championship system for the 2005-06 school year. And it was, as you might expect, a hotly contested race.
Midland High scored 148 points, a 30-point improvement over last year when the Dawgs finished second to Lee in the standings. It was more a matter of consistency than dominance for Midland High this past year, as the school won or shared three district titles, one each in the fall, winter and spring seasons.
Conversely, Lee dropped 44 points from last year, the biggest drop of any school in the district. But that didn't mean that Lee had anything to be ashamed of, finishing with 143 points, just behind its crosstown rival in the points race. Lee led the district by winning or sharing six district championships.
In third place was the next biggest improvement in the district after Midland High -- San Angelo Central. With a 29-point improvement over last year, Central finished with 124 points to claim third place in the points standings. That was a two-notch improvement over last year's finish as the school won or shared two district titles.
Odessa High stays in the middle of the pack for the second straight year in fourth place, even though it scored seven more points than last year with 113. OHS won or shared three district titles.
The other Odessa school, Odessa Permian, showed a bigger improvement. Permian moved up a notch into fifth place this year with 103 points, a 21-point improvement over last year. Mojo won or shared two district championships.
But if Abilene High is in a slump, Abilene Cooper is in a full-blown athletic free fall. Cooper finished last in the district for the fourth straight year, scoring only 34 points, 19 fewer than last year. No Cooper team won or shared a district title.
Teams earn bonus points for each round they advance in the playoffs while individuals in swimming, track, golf, tennis and cross country can also earn a bonus point for their schools for winning region or state titles. All sports must be UIL sanctioned.
Strengths: Midland High was strong during the winter and spring seasons, scoring at least 56 points in each of those two seasons. MHS won or shared a district championship in each of the three seasons, winning volleyball in the fall, boys basketball in the winter and sharing the baseball title with crosstown rival Lee in the spring. The baseball team reached the state tournament and scored 16 points, the most points any school in the district scored in any sport. Also scoring in double figures was football, girls basketball and girls soccer. Girls swimming, softball and girls track just missed out scoring in double figures.
Noteworthy: Midland High had the most individual bonus points of any school, as individuals won regional titles in both boys and girls track as well as boys golf, adding to the team totals.
Strengths: Lee had an especially strong season in the spring, scoring 67 points, the highest point total for any team in any season. Maroon was strong on the diamond, as the baseball team shared the district title with MHS and Lee won in softball. Lee also won spring titles in boys golf and girls track. In the winter, Lee also won titles in girls basketball and girls swimming, which accounted for the school's highest point total in any sport with 14. Lee also scored in double figures in boys track and just missed scoring in double digits in tennis.
Strengths: Odessa High repeated its success of last year by sweeping boys and girls cross country team titles as well as winning the boys team track title. The school also scored in double digits in boys basketball (13 points for the school's highest single sport total), boys swimming, boys soccer and softball.
Strengths: Permian won district championships in girls soccer (with a school high 15 points) and girls golf. Mojo also scored in double digits in girls cross country and just missed scoring 10 points in boys soccer, boys golf and boys track.
Strengths: Abilene High was again strong in fall sports, winning district titles in football and tennis, scoring 14 and 13 points respectively. The school also scored in double figures in volleyball and boys golf.
Weaknesses: Abilene High didn't go scoreless in any sport, but scored only one point in baseball. The Eagles also scored only two points each in boys cross country, girls basketball, boys swimming, girls soccer and girls track.
Noteworthy: Abilene High got some bonus points in golf. The school's No. 2 boys golf team, finished above two other district varsity schools and a sixth place team finish, adding two points to the top team's score.
Strengths: Cooper didn't score in double digits in any sport. The school's best showing came in girls basketball, which tied for third to earn seven points and the school's only playoff berth in any sport this season.
Weaknesses: In the fall, Cooper went scoreless in girls cross country, while in the winter the school was shut out in both boys and girls swimming as well as boys basketball and boys soccer. In the spring, Cooper was shut out in girls track while scoring only one point in softball. The good news is that this looks like Cooper's last go-around as a 5A school before the next UIL realignment in 2008.
