The band, which has been on the music scene for a decade, won Best Band at the London awards ceremony, beating Arctic Monkeys and Pete Doherty's outfit Babyshambles.

But the young guns had their day in many of the other categories, with Jamie T, a 20-year-old from south west London, named Best Solo Artist ahead of heavyweights Jarvis Cocker, Radiohead star Thom Yorke and Lily Allen.

The Arctic Monkeys walked away with two awards – Best Album for their debut, Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not, and Best Music DVD for Scummy Man.

Supermodel Kate Moss attended with boyfriend Doherty, and while the musician went home empty-handed, Moss beat 15-stone US singer Beth Ditto, vocalist with US band The Gossip. to win Sexiest Woman.

The waif-like catwalk star was supposed to present the Godlike Genius Award to Primal Scream but she and her boyfriend had disappeared when the gong was announced.

Otherwise it was a night of success for British music – Devon trio Muse won Best British Band, beating Oasis, Babyshambles, Kasabian and the Arctic Monkeys.

There was even more bad news for the trainer and gold earring-wearing star, known as the Queen of Chav, when she was named worst-dressed celebrity at the awards.
