WILKES-BARRE - A few days after running roughshod over their first-round opponents, things should get a lot tougher for six teams from the Wyoming Valley Conference as the state boys and girls basketball tournaments enter the second round this week.

The WVC won six of its eight first-round games, most of them in impressive fashion. The six winners defeated their opponents by an average of 23.3 points. The Bishop Hoban boys, as well as the Nanticoke Area and Bishop O'Reilly girls defeated their opponents by 30 or more points.

"It's always good to get that first win under your belt," said GAR head coach Paul Brown, whose team defeated District 4 champion Southern Columbia in a Class 2A game. "There's always a bit of apprehension in the first round. You have limited knowledge of your opponent and the first quarter is always a feel-out period."

Second round action begins at 6 p.m. tomorrow when the District 2 Class 3A champion Crestwood (19-8) boys face D3 third seed James Buchanan (24-4) at Shamokin High School. James Buchanan advanced with a 60-58 win against Communications Tech. The winner will play either D1 champion Springfield DELCO (21-7) or D11 runner-up Southern Lehigh (19-9).

At 6 p.m. in a Class 3A game, D2 champion Nanticoke Area (28-0) plays D3 third seed Boiling Springs (26-3), which advanced with a 55-36 win against Prep Charter. The winner will play either D1 champion Mount St. Joseph (26-2) or D3 fourth seed Lampter Strasburg (21-10).

In the Class 4A boys game at 7:30 p.m., D2 champion Hazleton Area (26-1) will face D3 fifth seed Wilson (28-4), which advanced with a 65-46 win against Souderton. The winner will play either D1 champion Chester (25-5) or D12 third seed South Philadelphia (21-7).

The Bishop Hoban (29-0) boys team will look to keep its perfect season intact when it faces D3 second seed Tulpehocken (25-5) at 7:30 p.m. at Hazleton Area High School in a Class 2A game. Tulpehocken advanced with a 43-39 overtime win against Hughesville. The winner will play either D3 third seed GAR or D12 runner-up Imhotep Charter (20-7).

Also Wednesday night, D2 champion Bishop O'Reilly (21-7) will take on D3 third seed Reading Central Catholic at 7 p.m. at Blue Mountain High School in a Class A girls contest. Reading Central Catholic advanced with a stunning 37-18 win against D1 champion Jenkintown.

The GAR boys will face a tough task when it faces D12 runner-up Imhotep Charter (20-7) at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Bethlehem Freedom High School. The winner will play either Bishop Hoban or Tulpehocken.

Imhotep has three starters who will be playing Division I college hoops next season. Jermaine Washington and Tamir Johnson have committed to play at Central Connecticut, while Ka-shief Edwards will play for Niagara. Imhotep advanced with a convincing 62-38 win against Notre Dame Green Pond.
