Three local basketball teams saw their state championship hopes erased early. The Lackawanna Trail girls lost to Notre Dame-Green Pond, 63-43, while the Trail boys lost to Weatherly, 53-46. The Elk Lake girls fell to Minersville, 69-45.

TA hoopsters John Boretti, Jim Fenwick and Marc Marini were named to the honorable mention Wyoming Valley Conference team as selected by the Sunday Independent.

The TA varsity swimming awards banquet was held at ShadowBrook with Bill Cresko winning the most dedicated swimmer award, and Dave Kalinowski and Dave Lupinski tied for highest point total. Kalinowski participated with E.J. Shaffer and Jenny Ross in the state swimming and diving competition. Kalinowski finished 24th in the 100-freestyle; 17th in the 200-freestyle. Shaffer finished 24th in the diving competition and Ross 22nd.

TA grad Rick Marabell, who wrestled at 126 pounds for Keystone College, was named to the Region 19 All-Star Team. He closed out his Keystone career with a 33-7-1 record.

Pennsylvania's all-time basketball great, Tom Gola, will be the featured speaker at the Tunkhannock Boosters Club All-Sports Banquet. Gola who had 2,222 points at LaSalle was the first in the stte to surpass 2,000 points in a career and is presently in the Pennsylvania General Assembly.

The Tunkhannock Area seniors beat the Tunkhannock faculty 83-58, in an Explorer Scout benefit basketball game. Leading scorer for the faculty was Norm Sisele with 18. Leading for the seniors was Gary Landon with 23.

Two brother acts are featured on the Tunkhannock Area entry in this year's Suburban Volleyball League. In addition to Marion and Mike Gabriel, two sons of Coach Ernie Holdredge are on this year's varsity, Richie and John.

A meeting for the organization of a Teener League in the Lackawanna Trail School District was being held at the Dalton Elementary School. Presentation of a trophy was made to retiring Dalton Little League Coach Donald Antione, by the Little League Mothers.

Clarks Summit won the PIAA basketball title last Thursday with a 38-22 win over Scott Township at Tunkhannock. Summit will now enter the state Class B Tournament.

The Scranton Musketeers, led by Dick O'Dea of Dalton, will take on a team from Binghamton in a benefit ball game at Montrose High School to raise money for the Montrose Memorial Park playground fund.

Factoryville American Legion basketball team, region winners in the Legion league, will take on a Tunkhannock team made up of the best players from the local Legion and Freddie's teams, in what promises to be the best game played since the days when the Penn State Leaguers played here. Prothonotary Albert Slocum will serve as referee and Edwin Kehrli, Wyoming County Superintendent of Schools, will serve as umpire. Slocum comes from Factoryville and Kehrli from Nicholson, which will very likely influence the betting odds against Tunkhannock.

Tunkhannock was defeated in both of its games in the District 12 volleyball tournament held at Nicholson last week. Nicholson won two out of two to win the District championship, and Montrose the only other team competing won one and lost two.

The Bowman's Creek Grange No. 820 basketball teams played two games on the past week. Our Grange has two boy teams and two girl teams. There is a standing challenge to play any Grange team at our hall. Visiting team must be all-Grange team. Brother C.A. Boston of the Tanners Bank is coach of the girls teams.

The trapping season for skunks, mink, muskrat and opossum ended with the last day of February, but raw fur dealers are allowed until March 15 to dispose of their stock. County Commissioner H.R. Tague who is one of the heaviest buyers in the county, was closing up the season on Saturday.

Russell Ace, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Ace, was pictured among a group of Penn State wrestlers who are bidding for the college title in one of the Sunday newspapers. He is making his mark in the field of athletic sports and will figure in the meet to be held at the University of Pennsylvania tomorrow and Saturday.
