Genny Horning has played lacrosse for as long as she can remember. She grew up playing in Baltimore and continued at the University of Virginia during the late 1980s. She was usually successful on the field.

She is in a rare situation at Centaurus. Due to a shortage of players, Centaurus is a unified team that pulls players from nine different schools in Boulder Valley School District.

Horning lives in what she calls a “coaching family.” Her husband, Andy, is the junior varsity and assistant boys basketball coach at Boulder High School and coaches an AAU basketball team as well.

During the game against Rampart, Chloe Barrett-Page was called for a foul and received a yellow card. She ran over to the sideline and apologized. Horning put her arm around her player’s shoulders, told her it was alright and then calmly explained what happened and what Barrett-Page should do in the future.

She also expects each player to be well-rounded. Each girl should strive to be strong emotionally, socially, mentally, academically and physically, she said.

As for returnining players, Nora Behnfield is only a junior but is already in her third year on varsity. Meredith Dodd, another junior and the team’s starting goalie, was also on varsity as a freshman, and Horning expects lots of scoring this year from Demara, yet another junior.
