Eastern Michigan's Catherine Fortin finished in a tie for third at the Rio Verde Invitational this past weekend. The tournament was held on the 5,558-yard, par-72 Quail Run course of Rio Verde Country Club in Rio Verde, Ariz.

Fortin shot a three-round total of 220, with individual rounds of 74, 73 and 73. She had seven birdies throughout the three-day tournament. The tie for third place marked her third top-five finish of the season and her fourth top-10. She has placed in at least in the top-20 in all seven of the tournaments she has competed in this year. Baylor's Allison Martin, a senior, won the tournament by three strokes with a score of 212 (74-73-71).

As a team, EMU finished in eighth out of 18 schools. The women carded a three round total of 915 (303-308-304). Baylor won the tournament with a three-round total of 886 (289-300-297), while Arkansas-Little Rock finished only three shots behind and came in second place with a three-round total of 889 (298-296-295).

"I thought we played pretty good, but I'm kind of disappointed," coach Sandy Wagner said. "We still have a lot of work to do especially in our short game."

It was the Eagles' second tournament in consecutive weekends in Arizona. The west coast trip allowed the team a chance to play in nice weather and on real grass, as opposed to practice mats.

According to Wagner, the team is struggling with things that are not in its control, such as Michigan's weather, but they are making the best of it. The girls aren't playing as consistent as she wishes. She said they will have four players have good rounds and two players have bad rounds, but once they take care of all the little things they can be a contender.

All six women had at least one round in the 70's for the Eagles. Sophomore Stephany Fleet shot a three-round total of 228 (76-78-74) and finished in a tie for 21st. Junior Paola Sanchez shot 239 (83-78-78), redshirt freshman Marjorie Thuout shot 239 (81-79-79), sophomore Courtney Aili shot 243 (76-82-85) and senior Kelly Boogaard shot 246 (77-82-87).

"Overall we've played well," Fleet said. "We had 12 rounds in the 70's. Catherine (Fortin) played well. I hope we can do a little better though so we can show how much work we've been putting in."
