Gillette is on track to win its ninth consecutive award in the combined competition, but both Cheyenne Central and Natrona County are making the Camels earn it.

Gillette has a big lead in the boys' competition, leading challengers Natrona, Laramie, Cheyenne East and Cheyenne Central by more than 30 points each.

Central's Indians lead the girls' competition by 14 points on second-place Gillette, while Natrona County and Sheridan trail close. Each school has won a pair of state titles so far this year.

Lander has won each of the past six combined competitions and is in position to win a seventh, but Jackson trails the Tigers by only two points.

Jackson has never won an all-sports award of any kind, but in addition to challenging Lander for the combined crown, the Broncs lead Lander by 16 points in the girls' competition.

Douglas, which is third in the combined race, leads Star Valley by 10 points in the boys' competition despite not yet winning a state championship. Douglas last won the boys' award in 2000 -- without winning a state title during that school year.

A strong showing at the Wyoming State High School Basketball Championships gave Tongue River -- a school that has never won an all-sports award -- a big lead in the 2A combined race. The Eagles lead Lusk by 17 points.

TR leads Lusk by three points in the boys' race, while Sheridan County rival Big Horn has a four-point lead on second-place Tongue River in the girls' competition. Like Tongue River, Big Horn has never won an all-sports award in any category.

Cokeville and Burlington are trying to pull away from the field in the 1A combined race. Not surprisingly, those schools also lead the gender competitions.

The Cokeville boys -- winners of the past five awards in their category -- again lead the pack, with Upton and Guernsey challenging. The girls' competition is fronted by Burlington, but both Arvada-Clearmont and Lingle could challenge for the banner.

Points are awarded based on finishes at state culminating events, and banners are awarded to the winning schools in the three categories at the end of the school year. Ties are broken by the number of state championships (in parenthesis). Schools not listed have not scored.
