To finish second in one of the wildest Marmonte League boys' track team championship races two years ago, Westlake High scrambled for every point it could squeeze out of a young team.

As one of the favorites for the 2007 league title, Westlake is still counting on nationally ranked distance runner Cory Primm for two or three wins in key dual meets.

Westlake opened the Marmonte League season last week with wins over Simi Valley and Calabasas. This week is a duel with Moorpark (2-0). The league title could be decided on April 4 with a double-dual between Thousand Oaks, Royal and Westlake.

Besides Primm, Westlake has two other 400 runners - Cooper Shockley and Max MaCat - among the county's top 10. It's no wonder that the Warriors have one of the state's best 4 x 400 relays (the Warriors rank No. 8 on the state list at 3:25.47).

Tony Droupe is a county co-leader in the shot put (48 feet, 3 inches), while Byron Sells and Michael Streck-Woodard rank high among the top area sprinters.

Hurdlers Justin Lilly and Brandon Bignell are a solid 1-2 punch. Other top scorers include distance runner Brendin Williamson and jumper Curtis Peterson.

At the Azusa Pacific Meet of Champions on Saturday, Alex Bryant moved to second place on the school's all-time 3,200-meter list with a time of 9:19.85. It was a 41-second improvement for Bryant.

Daniel Simmons produced the program's second best frosh-soph 1,600 time (4:27.49). In all, eight Ventura runners had times of 4:40 or faster for the 1,600. In the girls' 1,600, Becky Brinkenhoff won her heat in 5:12.30.
