Curry, who works at the South Bay Center for Counseling, and other volunteers painted the fence, gate and garage. They planted pink azaleas and impatiens. They also cooked Thai noodles, lumpia egg rolls and deep-fried plantains.
At the Islamic Center of Hawthorne, about 50 volunteers packed clothing into boxes that will be delivered to Los Angeles County's homeless and needy. Two girls sold cups of lemonade.
In one of the center's classrooms, volunteers sat at five tables making faux flowers that were delivered to four hospices and senior homes in Hawthorne.
The volunteers folded thin sheets of colored tissue paper, then cut out hearts and other shapes to glue to thicker paper pots. Effusions of blue, orange and green enveloped the monochrome pots.
"One of our goals is to promote community service," said Ammar Kahf, the event organizer. "We find it a good way to serve our goals and help the people of Hawthorne and the vicinity around us."
While Sunday's service events were spread across the Los Angeles area, several were held Saturday in San Pedro, Wilmington, Harbor City, Gardena and Westchester.
About 35 volunteers planted bulbs and perennials and painted the school's south-facing wall on O'Farrell Street, said Dennis Lord, the utility's public affairs manager.
