"Giselle" premiered at the Paris Opera on June 28, 1841. Theophile Gautier, a French poet, author and critic, created "Giselle" for Carlotta Grisi, a ballerina he loved. Gautier wrote the libretto with Jules-Henri Vernoy, Marquis de Saint-Georges.

"Giselle" is a Romantic ballet. The hairstyle, a low bun, and the tutu, white and bell-shaped, have become the quintessence of a Romantic ballet costume. And Giselle herself is a ballet heroine, considered by some the role of a lifetime. The original music by Adolphe Adam was written specifically for "Giselle," which was unusual at the time.

Giselle is a peasant girl loved by Hilarion, a gamekeeper. Duke Albrecht arrives in her village, disguises himself as a peasant, courts her and wins her heart. An angry Hilarion reveals Albrecht's identity. Giselle discovers Albrecht is betrothed, and her heart breaks.

Albrecht comes to Giselle's grave to mourn. He is able to see her ghost. Hilarion, too, comes to the woods, but is danced to death by the Wilis, the spirits of young girls jilted before their wedding day. Albrecht is condemned to the same fate, but Giselle sustains him to first light.
