Making their first high school city championship appearance since 2001, the Trojans grabbed the title last night with a thrilling 60-56 win over the John Diefenbaker Chiefs at Crescent Heights high school in the Div. 2 final.
It's Aberhart's first city banner since it capped off four in a row back in 2001. The Trojans did it with good defence and even better rebounding by the likes of rebounding machine Adam Lonseth, Jeremy Stanley and Sean Booth.
Aberhart, whose only loss this season came against the Chiefs, was comfortably in the lead, up by 14 early in the second half but Diefenbaker fought back, led by Brighton Gbarazia, who had a game-high 23 points.
Diefenbaker trailed 57-54 with less than a minute remaining but couldn't make a basket when it counted. So the Chiefs started fouling, forcing Aberhart to the line but Stanley made three of four free throws to give the Trojans some insurance.
The Bishop O'Byrne Trailblazers ran away with the Div. 2 senior girls title, romping to an 80-56 win over the Bishop Carroll Cardinals earlier in the evening.
"Going undefeated is the icing on top but this is the big game and winning this one is a big deal," said O'Byrne head coach Michael Ryall. "We really set the tempo in the first half and kept it going from there."
The Trailblazers led 42-23 heading into the final 20 minutes then cruised through the second half. Grade 11 Blazer Megan Lang led all scorers with 21 points as she hit from outside, inside and everywhere in between, while teammate and O'Byrne co-captain Bailey Lomas added another 19.
