Several double-winners highlighted Saturday's Greater Atlanta Christian School Invitational in Norcross, but perhaps the most outstanding performance was turned in by Providence Christian's .
Averso cleared a season-high 6 feet, 10 inches in the high jump, the top performance of the season in Georgia. His winning height was a half-foot better than the second-place competitor.
The host Spartans were led by , who won the 800 (1:58.13) and 1,600 meters (4:30.09), and was second in the high jump (6-4). won the 110 hurdles (15.29) and was second in the 300 hurdles (40.98). was second behind Schneider in the 800 (1:59.80) and 1,600 (4:32.22). placed second in the 100 (11.36) and pole vault (15-0). was second in the long jump (20-10) and third in the triple jump (40-8 3/4).
Peachtree Ridge placed second among the boys. led the way, winning the 200 (22.60) and 400 (50.78), won the 100 (11.29). Douglas also was fourth in the 200. Other second-place point winners for the Lions: , 3,200 (10:28.6);, 110 hurdles (15.44); and , discus (133-8 1/2).
In the girls meet, Buford's and Mill Creek's were double-winners. Wilson won the 100 (12.39) and 200 (25.99), and Watson won the high jump (5-0) and triple jump (35-2).
Steeplechase isn't a Georgia High School Association event, but Brookwood showed it has some ability in the event at last weekend's Disney's Track and Field Showcase in Orlando.
Three Broncos placed in the boys 2,000-meter steeplechase, and second-place came within a second of winning. His time of 6:45.98 was shy of the winning time of 6:45.09. was fourth (7:00.15), and was seventh (7:23).
(10:22.96) won the unseeded 3,200 meters race, which did not award team points. By comparison, teammate was 10th in the seeded 3,200 in 10:17.55. Only the top eight finishers earn team points.
Israel won the shot put with a throw of 60 feet, 2 1/4 inches, the first 60-plus throw in the state this season. He was second in the discus with a distance of 154-10.
, Collins Hill's superstar basketball player, was Gwinnett's only other event winner. She was one of four high jumpers to clear 5-4 but placed first with fewer overall misses.
• Dacula pole vaulter placed second in the girls pole vault (10-6), but was Georgia's highest finisher. of Mountain Brook, Ala., won the event with a vault of 11-0.
• of Collins Hill placed in the three events. She was second in the triple jump (37-8 1/2) and ninth in the long jump (16-7 1/4) in field events, and second in the 100 hurdles (14.11).
• North Gwinnett pole vaulter was third, with a personal-best height of 13-0. Teammate (12-0) was ninth. Both vaulters are ranked in the top 10 in the state.
