Chapman's Alex McClure, left, can't hold onto the ball to make the tag as Broome's Katie Covington slides safely into second base on Wednesday in Inman. The Lady Panthers won 1-0 in eight innings.
Meng's sprint home and slide at the plate capped off a Chapman win 1-0 during a pitching duel between senior Chelsi Edwards and Broome (7-4, 3-2 Region II-2A) freshman Shelby Spencer.
Meng led off the bottom of the eighth inning with a single that bounced off Spencer's shoe. Meng legged out the infield single, then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and stole third with two outs.
Edwards' bid for a no-hitter was broken up in the fifth inning when Katy Ellisor hit a single to center. Spencer's bid went to the bottom of the seventh, when Edwards hit a hard line drive into center field that Kelly Brannon got a glove on while going backward and it was ruled a hit.
After Ellisor's single in the fifth, she was bunted to second but stranded there when Edwards recorded one of her 19 strikeouts. Edwards struck out the side four times, including the final inning.
